Ottawa Technical Secondary School is pleased to offer its students a full range of athletic opportunities through varsity, intramural and VOCOM individual and team sports. We believe that student involvement in physical activities supports the development of teamwork skills, conflict resolution, positive relationships and healthy active living skills. That is why we aim to provide our students with many different programming opportunities to participate in our program.
Extra-Curricular Athletic Programs at OTSS include:
- Daily lunch time open gym and intramurals.
- VOCOM tournaments - 1 day tournament versus Sir Guy Carleton SS (sports include; basketball, volleyball, touch football, softball, floor hockey, soccer, dodgeball).
- Varsity Sports - part of the NCSSAA include; cross country running, wrestling, junior boys basketball, golf, track and field.
- Special Olympics (bocce ball, track and field, soccer, floor hockey).
- Special tournament days for students in our Autism program
- VOCOM tournaments for our students in our Physical Support Program (challenge cup, bocce ball, curling).
- Early bird and after school fitness club in our weight room including 12 spinning bikes (spring 2018).
The difference between VOCOM and VARSITY:
VOCOM:
- only versus Sir Guy Carleton S.S. (our sister school in the west)
- short term commitment for both students & staff (typically 2 weeks)
- lunch time practices
- 1 day tournament
- no cost
- recreational focus
VARSITY:
- versus any/all secondary school in the NCSSAA
- NCSSAA organizes league schedules
- competitive focus
- even with tiered play (all our team sports are in Tier 2/3, individual sport pursuits are Tier 1), preparation & competition are more intense
- practices before or after school
- team fee's apply (cost recovery)
