Grade 9 at OTSS

A Parent/Guardian’s Guide to Grade 9 at OTSS
Posted on 08/13/2018

Getting ready to send a student off to Grade 9 at Ottawa Technical Secondary School? School starts on Tuesday, September 4th at 9:00 am. Here are five things that our teachers want you to know:

1.         Make sure your student has a lock for their locker. The rest of their school supplies will be provided by Ottawa Tech, except running shoes and a change of clothes (active wear) for physical education.

2.         Encourage your student to get involved in school life. On Tuesday, September 25th, all Grade 9 students will go to MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre for a day of team building and orientation. OTSS has a number of programs outside of class for interested students. Our athletics department offers a large number of varsity sports (students try out for competitive teams), VOCOM sports (open to all interested students), drop-in activities, and a fitness room. Clubs such as students’ council, outdoor ed., basketball club and others usually meet during lunch time. Students who are involved in these activities are most likely to be engaged in school.

3.         Monitor your student’s attendance. The regular school day runs from 9:00 to 3:00. Students are expected to be in all of their classes every day - this is key to their success. Please be sure that they understand this responsibility. If they are absent, please phone the school attendance line at (613) 745-0347 ext. 2005 to let us know why and/or send them with a note the next day. We monitor student attendance and will be in touch if there are concerns.

4.         Be involved as a parent/guardian. Talk to your student about their day and reinforce their learning. Support the school’s rules and policies. Please consider attending monthly School Council meetings and plan to attend our Meet the Teacher evening on Thursday, September 20th, at 7:00 pm. I would truly like to meet all parents/guardians early in the school year. If you are looking for further information about our school, please check our website at http://www.otss.ocdsb.ca.

5.         Communicate with school staff. All staff can be reached by phone at the school number
(613) 745-0347, or by email at
firstname.lastname@ocdsb.ca. Please reach out with any questions or concerns. You may contact your student’s classroom teachers, guidance counsellor, learning support teacher, vice principals or principal. We are your partners in ensuring your student experiences tremendous success at OTSS.
