Athletics

JavelinThe Physical Education Program at OTSS is an active program that includes hundreds of students in regular classes and extra-curricular activities.
Each year students participate in VOCOM, Intramural, staff vs students and NCSSAA Athletic events.
The program has grown leaps and bounds over the years as it continues to develop into one of the more diverse programs across the board.
OTSS Athletics allow students the opportunity to experience new sports while competing at various levels of competition.
Each year comes to a close with an athletic awards assembly which honours all those students who have participated in the various sports teams throughout the athletic season.
MUSTANG NATION

The difference between VOCOM and VARSITY

VOCOM:

  • only versus Sir Guy Carleton S.S. (our sister school in the west)
  • short term commitment for both students & staff (typically 2 weeks)
  • lunch time practices
  • 1 day tournament
  • no cost
  • recreational focus

VARSITY:

  • versus any/all secondary school in the NCSSAA
  • NCSSAA organizes league schedules
  • competitive focus
  • even with tiered play (all our team sports are in Tier 2/3, individual sport pursuits are Tier 1,) preparation & competition are more intense
  • practices before or after school
  • team fee's apply (cost recovery)

For the 5th year in a row, O.T.S.S. has been awarded the Secondary School Quality Physical Education Award by Physical & Health Education Canada! We are 1 of only 5 schools in our system to be recognized. All aspects of the physical education program, intramurals and athletics are scrutinized before the honour is bestowed. We received a large banner noting this honour that will be put alongside the other 3 in the gymnasium as a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm demonstrated by our Physical Education program, Teaching staff, Teacher-Coaches & student-athletes.

OTSS Varsity Athlete of the Year 2011

On the heels of winning the NCSSAA (City) Wrestling Championship late this winter and qualifying for OFSAA, Dylan Stuckless turned his attention to applying his winning formula to Varsity Track and Field, and successful it was. In May of this year, Dylan won double Gold at the NCSSAA East Conference Track & Field Championships, as well as, the NCSSAA City Track and Field Championships in both discus and shot put, qualifying for the East Regional Track and Field Championships, being held in Brockville, in the process. At the East Regional Track and Field Championships Dylan finished 3rd in the shot put qualifying for his 2nd OFSAA Championship of the school year. At OFSAA, with a personal best (PB) throw, Dylan finished Top 10 in Ontario in shot put. On the basis of these achievements, Dylan was also awarded O.T.S.S. Varsity Athlete of The Year at the annual Athletic Awards Assembly. Just goes to show, with hard work, determination & passion, everyone can succeed. Well done Dylan! Mustang Nation Rules!!
